Black Museum 78 Episodes
The Black Museum is a radio crime drama based on real cases from the files of Scotland Yard and its famous Black Museum, a collection of objects connected to notorious crimes. Each episode began with an ordinary item, such as a brass button, a bath tub, or a champagne glass, and told the true story of the murder or crime behind it. Produced by Harry Alan Towers, the series was hosted and narrated by Orson Welles, whose rich voice and dramatic delivery gave every case a chilling sense of reality. The Stars Orson Welles served as host and narrator. The dramatic scenes were performed by a strong Australian cast, including Joe McCormick and the American actor Harp McGuire, because the series was recorded in Sydney. Welles recorded his introductions in London, and the tapes were flown to Australia to be added to the local performances. The scripts were written by Ira Marion, with music by Sidney Torch. Key Dates Broadcast Years – Recorded in 1951, broadcast in the United States in 1952 Network – Mutual, later Radio Luxembourg in Europe Genre – Crime, True Crime, Drama Episode Length – Approximately 30 minutes Other Information The Black Museum was among the first series produced in Australia in this way, combining local performances with a star narrator recorded overseas. More than 500 Mutual stations carried the program. Surprisingly, it was not broadcast by the BBC until 1991. Today, The Black Museum remains a favorite among fans of true crime, valued both for the stories it tells and for the commanding presence of Orson Welles.
