Tales From The Diamond K 38 Episodes
Tales From the Diamond K was a charming and fast paced juvenile Western series that captured the romance and adventure of the American frontier for young listeners in the early 1950s. Rather than relying on heavy gunplay or complex serialized drama, the program focused on standalone "rip-roaring yarns" and real-life historical stories of the Old West. From tales of hidden gold and buried treasure to legends of native tribes, cattle trails, and rodeo arenas, the show was structured like a friendly, camp fireside storytelling session designed to entertain and impart a sense of rugged frontier values to the postwar generation.
Nostalgic, wholesome, and rich with Western folklore, Tales From the Diamond K was celebrated for its friendly, casual atmosphere and its direct connection to the golden era of Hollywood’s silver screen cowboys.
The Stars
The undisputed star, host, and narrator of the series was international cinema icon Ken Maynard. As one of Hollywood's very first "singing cowboys" and an elite trick rider from the silent film era, Maynard brought immense real-world star power and authenticity to the microphone. Speaking directly to his young audience, he delivered each tale with a weathered, homespun charm that made him feel like a trusted mentor.
Equally billed as a star of the show was Maynard's famous white stallion, Tarzan. Tarzan, who had been Maynard's real-life equine costar in dozens of Hollywood films, was frequently referenced by Ken throughout the broadcasts, cementing the bond between the cowboy, his horse, and the kids listening at home.
Key Dates
The series was produced and broadcast in the early 1950s (circa 19511952), arriving on the airwaves during the final peak of the Golden Age of Radio.
It was a highly successful syndicated production, transcribed in Hollywood and distributed to hundreds of local stations across the United States to capture the afternoon youth market.
Keeping with the fast moving style of juvenile programming, episodes were produced in a crisp 15minute format, making each broadcast a perfect, self-contained daily adventure.
While radio historians believe that anywhere from several hundred to over a thousand episodes were originally recorded and aired, the vast majority have been lost to time, leaving fewer than 40 precious recordings in existence today.
Other Information
A hallmark of the show was its legendary merchandising and listener premiums. Maynard actively used his airtime to invite kids to join the "Diamond K" club by sending in a single dollar bill. In return, young buckaroos received a personalized phonograph recording of Ken's stories or a sandy colored, Western style "Shirt" featuring the Diamond K cattle brand emblazoned right on the front in bright red.
The production was named after Maynard's real-life touring venture, the Diamond K Wild West Circus, adding an extra layer of historical truth to the show's title. The episodes relied on light, traditional sound effects such as the whinnying of Tarzan or the ambient sounds of the open range to frame Maynard's storytelling without distracting from the narrative. Today, Tales From the Diamond K is treasured by OTR collectors as a rare and beautifully preserved time capsule that highlights the transition of early Hollywood film stars into the immersive "theater of the mind."
This collection comes preloaded on a USB stick, allowing you to easily transfer all episodes to the device of your choice. Enjoy seamless playback a perfect blend of vintage charm and modern convenience.
