Straight Arrow was a premier and highly popular Western adventure series that captured the imaginations of millions of young listeners during the postwar era. The show followed the double life of Steve Adams, a mild-mannered rancher who owned the Broken Bow Ranch. To the world, Steve appeared to be an ordinary citizen, but whenever injustice threatened the valley, he would retreat to a secret cave, don his traditional attire, and emerge as Straight Arrow a brilliant Comanche warrior dedicated to upholding law, order, and peace between settlers and Native Americans.
Thrilling, fast paced, and highly imaginative, Straight Arrow was known for its striking sound effects, its spectacular stunts, and its status as one of the ultimate "merchandise driven" hero shows of golden age radio.
The Stars
The title role of Steve Adams / Straight Arrow was played with heroic intensity by Howard Culver. Culver was a versatile radio veteran who brilliantly contrasted the quiet, softspoken nature of the rancher with the booming, commanding presence of the legendary Comanche avenger.
Straight Arrow's righthand man and closest friend was Packy McCloud, played by Fred Howard. Packy was an older, grizzled cowboy who was the only person alive trusted with the secret of Straight Arrow's true identity. Together, the duo faced down outlaws, rustlers, and corrupt land barons who sought to exploit the frontier.

Straight Arrow made its dramatic debut as a regional broadcast on May 14, 1948, before expanding to a massive national audience.
The series became a primetime staple on the Mutual Broadcasting System, running continuously until June 21, 1951.
Episodes were typically broadcast in a 30minute format, airing on Tuesday and Thursday evenings to eagerly awaiting children across the nation.
The show's immense popularity led to a concurrent Straight Arrow comic book series published by Magazine Enterprises, which ran into the mid1950s.

Every episode began with the thrilling sound of a beating TomTom drum, followed by a dramatic sound effect of an arrow piercing the air and striking a target with a loud thwack! The show was famously sponsored by Nabisco Shredded Wheat, and the announcer would famously invite kids to join the "Ingenuity" club, famously printing highly collectible Indian crafts, maps, and survival tips directly on the inside of the cereal boxes.
The production was celebrated for the mythological aura of its hero. Unlike typical Western leads who relied heavily on six-shooters, Straight Arrow was an unmatched master of the bow and arrow, capable of pinning a villain's sleeve to a wall from a hundred yards away. He rode a magnificent, golden palomino stallion named Fury, who would emerge from the secret cave at his master's call.
