Mandrake the Magician was a thrilling old time radio adventure series that brought the mystery and showmanship of the world’s most famous illusionist to life. Based on the legendary comic strip by Lee Falk, the show followed Mandrake, a master of hypnosis and prestidigitation who used his incredible "magic" to combat a gallery of colorful villains, extraterrestrial threats, and master criminals. Unlike traditional detectives who relied on ballistics or fingerprints, Mandrake defeated his foes by making them "believe" they were facing impossible terrors, famously using his ability to "gesture hypnotically" to turn the tide of battle.
Mystical, exotic, and fast paced, Mandrake the Magician was known for its imaginative scripts and its ability to blend the superhero genre with the classic tropes of international mystery.
The Stars
The series starred Raymond Edward Johnson as Mandrake. Johnson, who gained fame as the host of Inner Sanctum Mysteries , used his rich, velvet toned voice to imbue the character with an air of aristocratic mystery and calm authority.
Mandrake was never without his loyal companion and best friend, Lothar , the African prince of immense strength, played primarily by Juano Hernandez . Their partnership was one of the most famous duos in fiction, with Lothar providing the muscle to back up Mandrake’s mental illusions. The cast was rounded out by Francesca Lenni as Princess Narda, Mandrake’s elegant love interest and frequent partner in adventure.

Like many 1940s serials, it was sponsored by major brands most notably Kellogg’s Corn Flakes which helped solidify its place in the afternoon "adventure hour" for American households.

A recurring element was Mandrake's secret base, Xanadu , a high tech mansion filled with gadgets and trophies from his various cases.
